1924年10月，直奉第二次大战爆发。就在直系军阀吴佩孚与奉系军阀张作霖在山海关激战时，吴佩孚所属第三军司令冯玉祥却突然挥师入京，并于22日深夜，发动政变，包围总统府，囚禁了大总统曹锟。曹锟身陷囹圄，吴佩孚紧急从山海关前线驰援，但是精锐主力却被围困天津，孤立无援。群龙无首，山海关前线十万大军快速崩溃，最终吴佩孚不得不乘船南遁，直系政权由此覆灭。战争尽管结束，但北京政局却面临着重重危机。直奉大战后，奉军开始大举入关，早已准备问鼎中原的张作霖与冯玉祥在直隶地区展开争夺，角逐北京政权。。Kate Adie examines the impact of women's work on the Home Front during the First World War.
