明朝，孝宗弘治年间，京城城郊的一座大寺院“迦叶寺”以严谨著称，但有一人却机灵古怪，以打破寺规为乐，他就是不懂（张卫健 饰）。不懂的存在给整个寺院带来生气，也因一次偶然的机会，帮助孝宗皇帝度过了难关。 对不懂颇为信任的孝宗皇帝让不懂帮其去江南寻找一名会种极品茶花的人。这关联着孝宗皇帝的一段往事和其骨肉。阴差阳错的，不懂成为了观自在书屋的老师，授课的同时，边调查孝宗皇帝交代的事情。起初只想赶快回迦叶寺的不懂也在和学生们的相处中，渐渐爱上了教书的工作，也结识了各具特色的伙伴。而另一边，朝廷却不太平，权利真斗的背后，许多真相开始浮出水面，并且与不懂有关……。This film marks the directorial debut of Robert Benayoun.
